The “Big Five” pests covered in this course include rodents, cockroaches, flies, birds, and stored grain pests. Controlling these is critical for preventing food contamination and regulatory non-compliance. See our Principles of Food Plant Sanitation course for complementary sanitation practices.

IPM is a holistic, proactive approach that combines biological, chemical, and physical controls (e.g., exclusion, pest-proofing, and trapping) to solve pest problems while minimizing risks to product safety. This course details IPM components, including inspection, identification, and treatment.

21 CFR 117.35(c) requires that pests must not be allowed in any area of a food plant. Prevention of pest entry and harborage is also a key requirement under GFSI-audited schemes like SQF, BRCGS, and FSSC 22000. For advanced audits, see our Principles of Internal Auditing course.

Pest prevention by design includes using exclusion barriers (air curtains, door sweeps), maintaining plant exterior perimeters, and implementing proper drainage. Module 7 – “Pest Prevention By Design” explains how to structurally minimize pest pathways
